South Africa, one of the world’s most diverse and culturally rich nations, continues to command global attention as its iconic destinations and natural treasures earn prestigious international recognition.
In May, the New York Times ranked Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town, Western Cape, among the top 10 gardens in the world, a significant accolade for both the country and the African continent.
Welcoming the recognition, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment said the honour celebrates South Africa’s extraordinary natural heritage and underscores the global importance of one of its most iconic botanical landmarks. Nestled against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch is internationally renowned for showcasing indigenous plant species found nowhere else on Earth. It forms part of the Cape Floral Kingdom, the smallest yet richest of the world’s six floral kingdoms, and plays a leading role in conservation, research, and environmental education.
South Africa’s global appeal was further highlighted in July, when the country was ranked the fourth-best destination worldwide in the 2025 Telegraph Travel Awards, making it the highest-ranked African country on the list. The ranking reflects the nation’s diverse tourism offerings, from world-class wildlife experiences and dramatic coastlines to vibrant cities and cultural heritage.
Cape Town, in particular, continues to shine on the international stage. The city was ranked 11th in Time Out’s “Best Cities for Nightlife Right Now!”, recognised for its dynamic after-dark culture, creative spaces and thriving entertainment scene.
In November, Cape Town once again cemented its place as a global culinary destination, earning a spot on Condé Nast Traveller’s 2025 list for its rich, diverse, and world-class food scene. The recognition reflects the city’s layered history, blending African, Malay, European, and contemporary influences into a distinct and celebrated culinary identity.
The rankings were informed by a global survey that drew more than 750 000 responses from Condé Nast Traveller readers worldwide, offering insight into where travellers believe the world’s best food and travel experiences can be found, placing Cape Town firmly among the global elite.
