The United States Senate has formally confirmed Leo Brent Bozell III as the US ambassador-designate to South Africa, transforming his previously contested policy positions from campaign rhetoric into the official mandate of a confirmed envoy.
Bozell is expected to assume his post at a time of heightened diplomatic tension between Pretoria and Washington. His appointment follows a diplomatic firestorm sparked by a recent raid on a US-linked “refugee” facility in Johannesburg and the subsequent deportation of Kenyan staff members from the centre, incidents the US government has described as “unacceptable harassment”.
He is set to replace Reuben Brigety, who stepped down in November 2024.
Bozell’s confirmation comes amid strained bilateral relations, only months after South Africa’s former ambassador to the US, Ebrahim Rasool, was expelled and declared persona non grata following remarks critical of the United States and President Donald Trump.
Political tensions surrounding Bozell’s appointment have been particularly pronounced. Earlier this year, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) described his nomination as more than a routine diplomatic posting, characterising it as a calculated act of aggression against South Africa’s sovereignty and political autonomy.
Reacting to the confirmation, the Julius Malema-led party said President Trump had shown no intention of repairing relations with South Africa, instead seeking to deepen divisions and advance what it described as an “imperialist agenda” on South African soil.
The EFF further criticised Bozell as a deeply ideological figure rather than a conventional diplomat, describing him as a well-documented conservative activist and a staunch defender of right-wing extremism. The party argued that his career has been shaped by advancing narratives that undermine progressive values and entrench social and political divisions.
As Bozell prepares to take up his post, analysts expect his tenure to be closely scrutinised, with diplomatic observers watching for signs of either further strain or renewed engagement between South Africa and the United States.
