South African young scientists have made the nation proud at the World Innovative Science Project Olympiad (WISPO) 2025 in Bali, Indonesia, taking home top awards across multiple categories.
Among the standout achievements was Albertus Willem (Wium) van Niekerk of Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch, who was named a Grand Award Winner for his exceptional project. Van Niekerk also secured a Gold Medal in the Grade 10 category, underscoring his remarkable scientific talent.
Other South African gold medalists included Ismaail (Miles) Hassen, a Grade 11 student from Greenside High School in Johannesburg. Silver medals were awarded to Milla Vorster of Curro Durbanville High School in Cape Town and Dzunisa Chauke, a Grade 12 student from Khanyisa Education Centre in Limpopo.
The World Innovative Science Project Olympiad is an international competition that brings together young innovators from across the globe to showcase research and projects in fields ranging from environmental science and engineering to health and technology. The event aims to inspire creativity, critical thinking, and scientific inquiry among the next generation of global scientists.
