Unbeaten Blitzboks claim back-to-back Cape Town sevens titles

The Springbok Sevens team successfully defended their HSBC SVNS Cape Town title in spectacular fashion, edging Argentina 21–19 in a hard-fought final on Sunday afternoon.

The teams finished on three tries apiece, but it was a moment of defensive brilliance with time up on the clock that had the crowd of 31 941 on their feet, as the Blitzboks became the first team to successfully defend the Cape Town title.

The South Africans had to dig deep after Argentina surged to a 19–7 lead early in the second half. However, the Blitzboks showed tremendous resilience and composure to fight back and finish the weekend as the only unbeaten men’s team at DHL Stadium.

Argentina struck first from a midfield scrum, where they shifted the ball left for Luciano Gonzalez to cross the line. The conversion gave them a 7–0 lead after just two minutes.

A brief lapse in concentration from the Blitzboks allowed Argentina in for their second try straight from the restart, with Marcos Moneta racing away untouched to put his side 14–7 ahead.

Earlier on Sunday, the Blitzboks had outscored France by four tries to three in a thrilling 22–17 semi-final victory that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats throughout.
