Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth has been handed a 12-match suspension after being found guilty of intentional foul play following an eye-gouging incident involving Wales back-row forward Alex Mann.
The incident occurred last weekend during South Africa’s emphatic 73–0 victory over Wales at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, which secured a clean sweep on the Springboks’ Castle Lager Outgoing Tour for the second consecutive year.
Etzebeth was shown a straight red card in the 78th minute under Law 9.12, which relates to acts of foul play involving contact with the eye area.

The disciplinary committee, chaired by Christopher Quinlan KC alongside former international players Leon Lloyd and Becky Essex, reviewed multiple camera angles and written submissions before concluding that Etzebeth’s actions met the threshold for intentional contact. This resulted in a mid-range entry point of 18 weeks, according to Ruck.
However, the panel took several mitigating factors into account, including Etzebeth’s disciplinary record and his conduct throughout the process, and reduced the sanction by six weeks to a final ban of 12 matches.
Under World Rugby’s sanctioning framework, there was no scope for a lower entry point due to the nature of the offence. The ruling means the Sharks will be without one of their most influential forwards for a significant portion of the Champions Cup and United Rugby Championship campaign.
Etzebeth’s suspension will run from November 29, 2025, to March 28, 2026.
