The Western Cape, one of South Africa’s leading tourism and wine regions, has earned international recognition at the 2025 World Travel Awards, the Global Responsible Tourism Awards, and the World’s 50 Best Vineyards list.
The accolades highlight the province’s growing reputation as a world-class and sustainable destination that combines cultural heritage, community empowerment, and wine excellence.
At the Global Responsible Tourism Awards 2025, the Township & Village (T&V) initiative in Stellenbosch received a Silver Award in the Peace, Understanding & Inclusion category. Launched in 2018 with the support of the Stellenbosch Municipality, the initiative has welcomed over 2,500 visitors and empowered more than 40 local tourism providers, including guides, artisans, and small business owners. It has been praised for promoting dignity, inclusivity, and economic participation in historically marginalised communities.
Another standout from the province, the !Khwa ttu San Culture and Education Centre on the West Coast, was awarded Gold in the Increasing Local Sourcing & Creating Shared Value category. The centre celebrates the heritage of the San people and promotes rural development through ethical sourcing and immersive visitor experiences. In 2024, it supported 44 local producers and created 4,500 employment days, demonstrating how cultural tourism can drive social and economic transformation.
In the wine sector, four Western Cape estates were featured on the extended World’s 50 Best Vineyards list for 2025: Tokara Wine and Olive Estate and Delaire Graff Estate (both in Stellenbosch), La Motte Wine Estate (Franschhoek Valley), and Hamilton Russell Vineyards (Hemel-en-Aarde). These estates continue to attract global visitors through exceptional wines, stunning landscapes, and world-class hospitality, strengthening South Africa’s position as Africa’s premier wine tourism destination.
Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism Dr Ivan Meyer said the province’s achievements reflect the dedication and innovation of local communities and businesses. “These accolades underscore the Western Cape’s unwavering commitment to excellence in tourism and wine. We remain focused on driving sustainable growth and inclusivity across the province,” Meyer said.
The Western Cape Government congratulated all award recipients, noting that their achievements reinforce South Africa’s leadership in sustainable and responsible tourism across the African continent.
