Mamelodi Sundowns advances to CAF Champions League group stages

South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns has advanced to the CAF Champions League group stages.

Mamelodi Sundowns, the 2016 continental champions, advanced comfortably after another dominant performance that highlighted their depth and tactical superiority.

Under Miguel Cardoso, the Pretoria-based outfit continued their fine form, blending fluid attacking play with defensive solidity. The Brazilians now look poised to make another deep run in Africa’s premier club competition.

Meanwhile, Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs have also advanced to the CAF Confederation Cup group stages for the first time in 12 years as well as Stellenbosch United.

Orlando Pirates were the only South African side to miss out on the CAF Champions, suffering elimination in the final qualifying round. The Buccaneers’ exit will come as a disappointment to fans after a strong start to their continental campaign, but they will now turn their focus back to domestic competitions.

With Kaizer Chiefs, Stellenbosch United, and Mamelodi Sundowns carrying the PSL flag into the group stages, South Africa remains well represented in continental competitions, and supporters will be eager to see if one of the local giants can bring the trophy back home.
