Relief as escaped lion is safely captured in South Africa’s North West

The North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT) in South Africa has confirmed that the lion which escaped while being transported near Lichtenburg has been safely captured and no longer poses a threat to the community.

A video widely circulated on social media shows the lion escaping from a trailer and walking clumsily along the road.

The Department has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Preliminary findings suggest there may have been a breach of the conditions attached to the transport permit. However, the full investigation will determine whether the permit holder complied with all applicable legislation, including provisions in the South African National Standards (SANS) 1884-3, which govern the transportation, handling, and welfare of carnivores.

“This entails compliance with specific legal and safety specifications for cage and vehicle design, animal handling, and general welfare as outlined in the national guidelines,” the Department stated.

“Furthermore, the Department will verify compliance with Condition 5 of the permit, which requires the holder to have public liability insurance and be accountable for any damages caused by escaped animals. Severe action will be taken against the permit holder if found to have violated permit conditions.

“Game farmers and wildlife transporters are strongly urged to obtain all relevant permits for the transportation of wildlife and to adhere strictly to permit conditions and safety protocols during transit, as required by law. Adherence to these safety measures is crucial to ensuring secure transportation and mitigating risks to the community.”
