Former French President Nicholas Sarkozy starts five-year prison sentence

Nicolas Sarkozy, who led France from 2007 to 2012, has been imprisoned in Paris following a five-year sentence for his involvement in a criminal conspiracy to secure campaign financing from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. This marks a historic moment, as Sarkozy becomes the first former president of France since World War II – and the first ex-leader of any EU nation – to serve prison time.

As reported by The Guardian, Sarkozy was convicted last month for orchestrating a plan to illicitly obtain funds from Gaddafi’s regime to support his successful 2007 presidential bid.

Presiding judge Nathalie Gavarino described the offense as particularly serious, emphasising that it posed a significant threat to public trust in the democratic process.

Shortly after Sarkozy was incarcerated, his legal team submitted a request for his release. The appeals court has up to two months to consider the motion. Depending on its decision, Sarkozy could be granted conditional release, such as home confinement with electronic monitoring. However, the court could deny the request if it believes detention is necessary to prevent interference with the case, including tampering with evidence or influencing witnesses.
