South African father granted bail after child fatally shoots farmworker

A 43-year-old father was granted bail of R3000 after appearing on a charge of negligent handling of a firearm. It is alleged that his minor 11-year-old child shot and killed Frans Modise(39), a casual worker at one of the farms in Thabazimbi, Limpopo.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said it is alleged that the minor child was shooting at a Guinea fowl.

“The brother of the deceased was at the scene when the incident occurred and alerted the father of the child, who then called the police and emergency medical services. Upon the arrival of the police officers, they found the lifeless body with a gunshot wound to the upper body. The emergency personnel certified the death of Modise at the scene.

“The minor child did not appear in court since he is below the age of criminal capacity, and he will be dealt with by the Department of Social Development in terms of the Child Justice Act,” NPA spokesperson in Limpopo Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said.

The case was postponed to 12 December 2025 for further investigations.
