From coal to clean: Eskom’s 3rd conference champions local solutions for energy transition

South Africa’s national power supplier Eskom says the need to transition from coal to clean energy remains a key strategic imperative.

The power utility held its third Clean Energy Conference under the theme “Advancing a Clean Energy Transition for our Context – Just, Affordable, Accessible, Inclusive”.

Eskom said the flagship platform underscores a collective commitment to shaping inclusive, sustainable energy pathways for South Africa and the continent.

“The conference is designed to catalyse Africa-driven, action-oriented responses to the global energy transition, reinforcing the continent’s leadership and voice in shaping a sustainable energy future,” Eskom said.

Eskom Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dan Marokane said South Africa’s context-specific challenges and socio-economic needs must be considered.

“Eskom is focused on a balanced energy mix, not coal vs renewables, but a considered shift to cleaner resources,” Marokane said.

Eskom operates several coal-fired power stations, including Arnot, Camden, Duvha, Grootvlei, Hendrina, Kendal, Komati, Kriel, Kusile, Lethabo, Majuba, Matla, Matimba, and Tutuka. Mostly situated in Mpumalanga and Limpopo, these facilities make up the bulk of Eskom’s generation capacity and remain central to South Africa’s electricity supply. However, the country is gradually shifting toward cleaner energy alternatives as part of its broader energy transition.
