The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has confirmed that the South Africans kidnapped by Israeli forces have been released from detention and will be repatriated on Tuesday, 7 October.
The six South Africans, including Nelson Mandela’s grandson Chief Zwelivelile ‘Mandla’ Mandela, are part of the activists who were abducted while aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla vessels trying to reach Gaza with humanitarian aid. They were detained at Negev Prison in Israel.
On Monday, October 6, DIRCO said they have received confirmation that the individuals in question are scheduled to be released from detention and will be repatriated, departing via Jordan.
“Minister Lamola extends his gratitude to all relevant parties, both domestically and internationally, for their cooperation and coordination in ensuring the return of the South African citizens,” DIRCO spokesperson Chrispin Phiri said.
