A military tribunal in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has handed down a death sentence to former President Joseph Kabila.
Kabila, who led the DRC from 2001 to 2019, reportedly left the country in 2023 but recently returned to visit Goma, a region currently under the control of the M23 rebel group.
According to Al Jazeera, Kabila was found guilty of several serious offenses, including treason, crimes against humanity, murder, sexual violence, torture, and leading an insurrection.
Lieutenant General Joseph Katalayi, who oversaw the tribunal, stated that under Article 7 of the Military Penal Code, the court is required to impose the harshest punishment available—the death penalty.
Kabila was tried in absentia starting in July, accused of backing the M23 rebels, who are reportedly supported by Rwanda and have captured significant areas in eastern DRC this year.
