South Africa’s ambassador to France, Nkosinathi “Nathi” Mthethwa, has died.
According to French media reports, the 58-year-old former Member of Parliament (MP)’s body was discovered outside the Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile in the Porte Maillot district
It is alleged that he fell from the 22nd floor of the hotel, though local authorities have not yet confirmed the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
It is further reported that Mthethwa’s disappearance had been reported by his wife, “who said she had received a disturbing message from him in the evening,” according to the Paris prosecutor’s office.
According to early findings, his phone last pinged around 15:00 on Monday, in the area of the Bois de Boulogne in Paris (16th arrondissement). Fearing a possible suicide, the police, supported by the canine unit, had searched the wooded area in western Paris.
Mthethwa was a member of South Africa’s liberation party, the African National Congress (ANC), and had been posted to the French Embassy since 2024.
