South African airline FlySafair has announced that it is providing counselling support to passengers after a fellow traveler passed away during one of its flights.
The passenger died aboard a flight from the King Shaka International Airport in Durban to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.
FlySafair’s spokesperson Kirby Gordon confirmed that the passenger was cleared to travel by medical staff based at King Shaka Airport. However, the passenger’s condition worsened mid-air. Sadly, she was declared dead just 10 minutes before the flight landed at OR Tambo Airport.
Gordon stated that the low-cost carrier recognises how upsetting the incident was for everyone on board and appreciates the passengers’ patience and understanding.
He explained that FlySafair’s crew members are trained to handle medical emergencies during flights as effectively as possible until expert medical help can take over.
He added that, as with any such incident, an internal review will be conducted to identify any lessons that can be learned.
Additionally, information about counseling services is available for any passengers who may be affected by the incident, and support is also being offered to the airline’s staff.
