SA throws weight behind first female UN secretary-general bid

President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa would support the decision to elect the first female secretary-general for the United Nations.

Ramaphosa said this as he addressed the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, in the United States.

On Monday, Ramaphosa touched down in New York to lead a South African delegation during High-Level Segment of the 80th Session of the UNGA

The High-Level Segment was scheduled to start on Tuesday, 23 September until Monday, 29 September under the theme “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights,” coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the UN Charter.

During his address on Tuesday, Ramaphosa said South Africa reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the empowerment of women and their full, equal and meaningful participation in all spheres of life.

“Yes, we would also support the election of a female secretary-general of the United Nations. That Beijing Conference milestone reminds us of our shared responsibility to advance human rights, dignity, and justice for all. We are all equal, men and women. There is no reason that we continue to hold the women of the world backwards,” he said.
